About the Course

The IOSH Certificate was developed by HME in conjunction with employers and experts in assisting and moving people. The aim was to provide back care advisors, moving and handling advisors, and trainers with a recognised qualification from IOSH, the world’s largest professional health and safety organisation.

This course has stood the test of time and become a benchmark for many who wish to employ assisting and moving trainers. Below is an example of content.

Course Duration

This is a five-day course delivered in two blocks. This is usually spread over two weeks, with the first three days in week one, and the final two in week two.

Course Aim

To provide a recognised qualification to those delivering manual handling training within their work setting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session the participant will:

  • Have an awareness of the impact of musculo-skeletal disorders on the worker, the client and the employer
  • Be familiar with how, and which, legislation applies in the field of Manual Handling
  • Recognise and understand professional standards within the field of Manual Handling
  • Have an awareness of the ergonomic approach
  • Have an awareness of the legal requirements and the practical application of risk assessment in the workplace for manual handling activities, and be able to complete such assessments
  • Have an awareness of, and be able to demonstrate, the principles of safe movement
  • Show an awareness of the training skills required to train others in Manual Handling
  • Recognise methods for engaging the workforce in safe Manual Handling
  • Be familiar with how competency assessments can be used in the workplace
  • Recognise, understand and be able to demonstrate all necessary manual handling techniques required in their workplace

Course Content

In addition to sessions meeting all of the above stated learning outcomes, this course contains a range of assessments of participants. These assessments include;

  • Writing a sample risk assessment
  • Delivering a short session on legislation or policy relating to manual handling
  • Delivering a short session on the use of manual handling techniques to support a person to move
  • Delivering a short session on the use of hoists or slings
  • A written questionnaire to test underlying knowledge
  • Competence in demonstration of practical techniques

All training delivered by participants is peer reviewed by the group and the facilitator, and opportunities for constructive feedback are offered throughout the course.
